A club grading and course took place on Sunday 16th December at Pitcairngreen Dojo. It was the last training session of the year and it was well attended with with 9 seniors and 7 juniors training. 3 Juniors sat mon grades and 5 seniors sat grades between 10th Kyu and 6th Kyu. All students worked hard and passed. It was a very hard grading and the standard was high. The training ended with a khion session. By the end all windows in the dojo were steamed up and the floor was wet with sweat. A great way to end the year. A Happy Christmas and Good New Year to all! OSU!

Shihan Martin, Sensei Belle and Senpai Brian attended the High Grade Course in Bridgend on Sunday 21st October. The course was attended by 16 high grades from Scotland, England and Wales. This included the 4 Shihans and 5 Senseis so it was a relatively low turnout from other black belts. The course lasted four and a half hours. Sensei Belle took the warm up and then Shihan Jose took the class through Ido Geko and Sanchin, Pinan Sono Ichi and Pinan Sono Ni katas. Sensei Mark and Shihan Mac then passed on things they had been taught at the Black Belt Conference in Canada. This included footwork drills and Bo Kata changes. Shihan Paul went over the proper etiquette for judges and we practiced whilst we scored katas for the students who are scheduled to sit national gradings next year. It was an excellent course and well worth the 880 mile drive there and back.
The British Open was held again in Ware this year. This year we had three students taking part in the kata competition. Senpai Brian won the Men's Kata section, Mathew Duff was second in the Junior under 12 Kata section and Dona Whyte was 4th in the Ladies Kata section. It was a good performance from the Scottish dojos and this was down to the many hours invested in teaching the kata by Sensei Belle and Shihan Martin. More pictures can be seen on the Gallery page.
Shihan Martin attended the Summer Camp which took place in Bury St Edmunds during the first week in July.
Senpai Brian attended the Iain Abernethy Seminar in Motrose at the start of June. There were over 25 students at the seminar from Scotland, most of whom were from Shotokan organisations. The seminar taught the various throws that can be found in the Pinan katas.
UFC Welterweight Champion Georges St-Pierre, also known as "GSP" who's origin is Kyokushin Karate visited Kancho Shokei Matsui on February 22. GSP started Kyokushin Karate at the age of 7 in Canada and developed the basics as a fighter and made his MMA debut in 2002. He moved to UFC from 2004, and after winning the welterweight title in 2008 has successfully defended it 6 times making him one of the best MMA fighters in the world. This meeting materialised when GSP himself visiting Japan for the first time contacted Honbu with his desire to meet the head of Kyokushin, Kancho Matsui the roots of his martial arts. He quoted "I idolised Sosai Oyama and Kancho Matsui since I was a child. Unfortunately Sosai Oyama has passed away, but meeting Kancho Matsui has made my childhood dream come true" with a smile in his face. Kancho Matsui honored GSP's achievements by presenting the 3rd Dan Black Belt and ICHGEKI Dogi and gave his word of support to GSP.
The table below shows the 2012 dates for the Iain Abernethy seminars in Scotland. The Kyokushin Scotland clubs have a history of attending these seminars since we hosted one in 2006. They are an excellent way of learning and understanding practical kata bunkai.
